If you thought the first few days of the 2026 Legislative Session in Colorado would consist of representatives easing back into things, you thought wrong.
Aside from a droning and utterly out-of-touch speech from Governor Polis, which took 90 minutes of our lives we can never get back, this last week at the Capitol was packed full of interesting moments.
Here's a quick rundown of the top takeaways, along with 2026's first call to action!
First, a win secured on day one.
Rep. DeGraaf's amendment passed 53–12, changing the title of the Governor from “His Excellency” to “Honorable” in a resolution related to the State of the State address.
It's a minor win, but "No Kings"... right?
And you know Polis' feelings were hurt in the process, so it's a double win.
As we discussed last week, we can expect a lot of finger pointing from the Democrats related to the nearly $1B budget deficit.
Blaming Trump is currently their excuse of choice, but they never miss an opportunity to blame TABOR as well.
Even in a year when Coloradans statewide will not be receiving a TABOR refund, Democrat "leaders" opened the 2026 legislative session Wednesday vowing once again to overhaul our beloved constitutional limit on spending.
Another bill introduced by Democrats, SB26-005, will make anyone participating in immigration enforcement liable for civil damages. This means anyone feeling traumatized from a healthy dose of pepper spray for impeding federal enforcement or anyone claiming the cuffs were on their wrists a little too tight could sue their arresting officer.
An enormous oversight with this bill was immediately pointed out. Would someone calling in a tip to ICE be considered someone participating in "immigration enforcement", opening the door for them to be sued as well?
It's likely the bill sponsors don't care. A friend of ICE is an enemy of theirs.
Last year, Coloradans from across the state lowered the boom on the Capitol over HB25-1312, where parents could lose custody of their children for refusing to "affirm" their child's gender confusion.
True to their relentlessness and tone deafness, four Colorado Democrats immediately introduced a new bill this session to allow children to change their name, suppress the records documenting the name change and allow courts to strip away parental rights if parents don't “affirm” their child's name change.
SB26-018 was referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee, and we hope you will help us overwhelm members of the committee with emails this week and help kill this bill before it makes it to the Senate Floor.
Follow the button below for a pre-written (but editable) email you can instantly send to the committee members.
It's only been three days and the radical agenda we are fighting against is on full display in Denver!
If you thought the Second Amendment was ignored in week 1, think again! Senator Tom Sullivan wasted no time introducing legislation to expand Red Flag laws even further in Colorado. We will cover that bill soon.
Stay tuned, as the worst is surely yet to come!
