It's no longer "breaking news" that Colorado Democrats have forced our great state into a $1.5 billion budget deficit.
Once the sticker shock wears off, it's time to start looking for places to "cut, baby, cut!"
Here's what the members of the Joint Budget Committee are recommending first:
1. Chop $300 million from state refunds
2. Reduce funding for law enforcement
3. Allow state colleges and universities to jack up tuition costs
4. Make cuts to family caregiver support programs
What we aren't seeing is direct cuts to all the NGOs that Colorado politicians and their families operate and work at — grants that have exploded to the hundreds of millions in recent years.
And we certainly aren’t seeing any serious effort to rein in the spending for the 800-pound gorilla in the room: illegal immigrants.
"Cover All Coloradans"
When Governor Polis first signed Cover All Coloradans into law in 2022, projections said the program would cover approximately 3,700 people and cost a total of $14.7 million.
This year, the program covers 28,000 people and costs you $104.5 million.
That's 611% above estimates.
But here's the real kicker.
Cover All Coloradans helps "pregnant people" and children get health care coverage.
But more specifically, those "who would otherwise qualify for Medicaid but for their immigration status."
Pause here. Read that line again.
These "pregnant people" are illegal immigrants.
And among the budget line items to be cut or trimmed, Cover All Coloradans is not one of them.
In fact, the best members could do was cap the spending at $96 million per year.
There is absolutely no justification for forcing taxpayers to absorb massive cost overruns on programs exclusively serving illegal immigrants — especially when we face a budget deficit.
This is where you come in.

If "leadership" is actually serious about fixing a $1.5 billion deficit, then everything should be on the table.
Not just the refunds that belong to taxpayers.
The bottom line is that Colorado desperately needs a Department of Government efficiency.
But until we can elect real leaders in the state again, it continues to be all our jobs to point out the waste, fraud, and abuse and directly communicate our opinions to our elected officials.
